During the First World War, Talbot House in Poperinge was a place where soldiers could find rest behind the lines — a haven open to all ranks, without distinction of status. Founded in 1915 by army chaplain Tubby Clayton, it became known as the “Every Man’s Club.”
Today, Talbot House is preserved as a living museum and guesthouse, welcoming visitors from around the world. It remains a place of reflection and community, just as it was more than a century ago.
Every evening at 8pm, the buglers of the Last Post Association sound the Last Post beneath the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium — the traditional final salute to the fallen. This daily ceremony honours the memory of the soldiers of the British Empire and its allies who died in the Ypres Salient during the First World War, and has taken place almost without interruption since 1928.
